A.Introduction and Methodology

Between June and July 2007, the Prout Research Institute of Venezuela, along with other volunteers and community workers visited over sixty cooperatives in the Barlovento region of Venezuela. Their goals were threefold:

i) strengthen the relationships between cooperative members, the broader Barlovento community and the representatives of PRIV;
ii) obtain video footage of interviews with cooperative members and a glimpse into their daily activities for use in a documentary film project*;
iii) administer an eighty-question survey to document in more detail the genesis, composition and activities of the cooperatives to gain a general sense of the collective character of the organization.

In October of 2008, PRIV volunteers returned to Barlovento to conduct follow-up investigation into the status of the cooperatives and to present them with a copy of the documentary film.

THE HUMAN COSTS OF ECONOMIC MELTDOWN AND ITS ALTERNATIVE
by Dada Maheshvarananda

The New York Times editorial calls this “the scariest economic free fall the world has seen since 1929,” referring to the Great Depression that caused great suffering to millions. The sentiment is echoed by hundreds of leading economists, bankers and traders whose opinions are quoted daily, as they struggle to explain the economic fallout to the general public. Yet no one is able to confidently predict our economic future.

The US government first bailed out and then, following the lead set by Britain, France, Italy and Spain, began taking over some of the largest financial institutions. How many billions and trillions do they have? Of course the answer is that they already have more than 10 trillion dollars in national debt!...

Inauguration of PRIV in Caracas
On Saturday, June 21, 2008 (the Summer Solstice) the new headquarters of the Prout Research Institute of Venezuela was officially inaugurated. A very large 3-story house with beautiful gardens in a lovely residential neighborhood of Caracas, it has been donated to use forever. Nearly 100 people came, including government officials, neighbors and friends. The five-hour event included collective meditation, brief talks by each of the Board members wearing their PRIV shirts, the showing of our half-hour documentary made for Venezuelan television, “Another Life is Possible: Cooperatives in Barlovento, Venezuela”, and plenty of very delicious vegetarian food.

Below is an image of the Daily Journal article about the inauguration. To read the article, go to downloads: PRIVEN
