Education and Agricultural Transformation in Centro Madre

Didi showing worms to school kids by Mariah Branch, Director of Planning and Development PRIV

A group of school children from the local school came to visit our farm and were able to see recommended techniques for organic farming first hand. One of the Cuban agronomers has been working with their class and brought the children and their teachers out to see the farm so that they would better understand how to grow their own food. He introduced Didi Ananda Sadhana and she welcomed the students and began their tour of the farm.

We started in the compost area to show them how nutritious soil can be developed. Dada Atamapranananda helped the students gain a better understanding of the amount of heat generated by composting material by sticking an iron post into the center of the compost pile. The students were amazed to feel how hot the iron post got after just a few minutes in the compost pile.

Then Didi took the children to the worm composting section and allowed the kids to gently touch the worms, while she explained how vermacomposting works. [Use the Read More... button below]

Report from the 2009 PROUT Global Convention in Denmark
This Global Prout Convention, held July 20-27 2009, was commemorative of the 50th anniversary of P.R. Sarkar's first introduction of Prout. From 27 countries and every continent, 240 participants came (including 42 Wholetimers). Attendees came from as far away as Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Australia, New Zealand, and large contingents came from Portugal and Syria. The proceedings can now be downloaded from Proceedings Global Prout Convention 2009

Planning this event began nearly a year before. Ole Brekke (Vishvashanti) and his family led other Danish Proutists in organizing the infrastructure. He sent more than 200 individual sponsor letters to help participants from economically undeveloped countries get visas to attend.

The venue was beautiful Ananda Gaorii Master Unit in the countryside, one hour from Copenhagen, with lawns and gardens, apple trees and wild cherries. Dada Ambareshvarananda coordinated renovations which were done by Dada Rudranath, Pavan, Ashutosh (Brazil), Pam'kaj (Australia) and Dominic (Poland). Improvements to the kitchen, dining and accommodation facilities, painting, remodeling and cleaning went on for months, transforming the site so it can host large events.

Agicultural transformation in Centro Madre

Starting in February 2009, a very intense effort has been undertaken to develop a self-reliant, integrated farm at Centro Madre in Barlovento, Venezuela. Our goal is both to create a regular source of income from a wide variety of agricultural products and to educate the local community about the principles and practices of small-scale organic agriculture. Dada Atmapranananda supervised the agricultural project from dawn to dusk with his tireless effort. At each step of the way, we were advised and supported by two agronomists from the agricultural institute of the government (CIARA) in preparation for an inspection to evaluate the progress of our 3-hectare farm. In addition to two paid farm workers, many volunteers came from the Prout Research Institute of Venezuela and the Ananda Marga community to lend a hand to this collective effort. Several benefactors gave us financial donations to buy materials. It was astonishing how hard everyone worked, and the results were very impressive.

CIARA recognizes 12 aspects of an ideal integrated small-scale agricultural project. Half of them we already had, and the other half we started during this period: [Click Read more...]

An extraordinary educational experience took place for six weeks: 21 students from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil came to live and study in the Prout Research Institute of Venezuela. Their professor of transpersonal psychology, Louis Ricci, led them to Venezuela for both personal growth and to study and contribute to Prout's vision for social change.

Each day began at 6:00am with an hour of yoga asanas, followed by an hour of kiirtan chanting, silent meditation and spiritual reading. Three nutritious vegetarian meals a day were served. After 30 minutes of systematic collective cleaning of the house and garden, there was a Prout class each morning. The topics included Biopsychology, Exploitation, Heroes and Sadvipras, Changing the World, Proutist Economic Development and The Global Economic Crisis and its Opportunities.
